Onsite Septic Systems
Replacing a septic system can be costly- both financially and to the health of a family or community. The expense to replace a failing system can exceed $10,000. And damage to the soil and groundwater from leaking system components takes a long time to repair.
Wahkiakum County Public Health is responsible for permitting septic systems, overseeing the septic operation and maintenance program, and reviewing land use plans.
This work is important becasue it helps to protect the groundwater by:
- enforcing necessary state and local regulations, policies and procedures regading septic system installation and maintenance
- evaluating proposed sewage treatment sites
- issuing onsite septic system permits
- reviewing all septic system plans
- investigating failing septic systems and repairs
- reviewing and reporting on short plats, subdivisions, commercial development and proposed regulations
- educating and informing septic system owners about proper operation and maintenance of their systems
- working with other public agencies to monitor, improve and enforce local liquid waste policies and procedures
