Volunteers in Police Service
In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, Citizen Corps were created to help coordinate volunteer activities to make communities safer, stronger, and better prepared to respond to any emergency situation. Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) is a Citizen Corps partner program in place in many communities around America, with the goal of assisting law enforcement officers in preventing crime and responding to emergencies.
VIPS Mission: Enhance public safety through citizens involvement in Wahkiakum County
VIPS Goals: Promote emergency preparedness; promote crime prevention; and assist the Sheriff's Office as needed in other tasks.
Current Activities: Assist communities in developing Neighborhood Watch Programs; assist in local emergencies; assist with crowd control during large events; provide parking patrol in downtown Cathlamet; and provide the Sheriff's Office with extra sets of eyes and ears in the community.
