Different Terms of Office and What They Mean

What do the different terms of office mean?

Regular A regular term of office is the length of time that a person has been elected to serve (typically 4 or 6 years). Most terms of office begin January 1st following the general election and run through December 31st of the last year of the term. School Board terms of office begin at the first board of directors meeting following the certification of the November election.

Unexpired An unexpired term of office means that the person elected to the office left before the end of their regular term. The remaining amount of the regular term of office appears on the ballot as an unexpired term. The person elected to an unexpired term takes office immediately after certification of the November election and serves the remainder of the originally scheduled term.

Short/Full A short/full term of office means that the person elected to the office left before the end of their regular term for an office already scheduled to be on the ballot. The person elected to a short/full term takes office immediately after certification of the November election and serves the remainder of the originally scheduled term (short), as well as the next regular term (full).
