The Wahkiakum Youth Mentoring program’s mission is to strengthen youth connections to our local community by providing opportunities through adult support and community involvement. Our goal is to build healthy-minded, confident, skilled young leaders.
Connection to others and to our community is essential for the health and well-being of youth and families. Mentoring programs offer youth opportunities to acquire new skills and interests outside of school and seek guidance from adults beyond their parents and teachers. Our mentoring program includes group activities that connect youth with their community as a whole, opening doors to new possibilities.
This program is coordinated by Wahkiakum County Health and Human Services and the Wahkiakum Community Network. The program is funded by the Washington State Health Care Authority.
For Adult Mentors, the following is required:
• Complete an application
• Pass a reference check and a national background check
• Attend approximately 4 hours of training on child safety and best practices for providing mentoring
• Commitment to connect four hours per month with mentees for one year
What do we need?
In order to participate, families need to complete the registration form. Families are asked to commit to supporting their youth in being on time to meetings with their mentor and communicate at least monthly with program directors. Spots are limited, and youth may be put on a waiting list.
